Our Mission

AvatarRecovery was built to solve a common problem in the VRChat community: finding and recovering avatars you've seen or used before. VRChat's built-in search is limited, and once an avatar leaves your history it can be difficult to track down again. We provide a comprehensive, fast, and easy-to-use search engine that indexes publicly available avatar data so you can find what you're looking for.

Our service is designed to be a personal tool for individual users — not a distribution platform. We take creator rights seriously and provide straightforward mechanisms for avatar creators to exclude their work from our database.

How the Database Works

AvatarRecovery indexes avatar data that is publicly available through official VRChat APIs and services. Here's what you should know about our data collection:

  • Public data only — We only index avatars that are set to public visibility by their creators. Private, friends-only, or unlisted avatars are never accessed.
  • Official APIs — All data is obtained through VRChat's publicly documented APIs and services. We do not reverse-engineer, bypass restrictions, or use unauthorized access methods.
  • Respect for blacklists — When a creator adds the blacklist phrase to their avatar description, our system automatically detects it and excludes the avatar. This happens at indexing time with no manual review delay.
  • Regular updates — The database is continuously updated as new public avatars are created and existing ones are modified or removed.
  • Thumbnails and metadata — We store avatar thumbnails, names, author information, and IDs. We do not store or distribute avatar asset files unless a user has uploaded them through the proper channels.

AvatarRecovery offers a tiered access model to balance free community access with sustainable operation:

  • Free Tier — Search and browse all indexed avatars. Preview thumbnails, view author and ID details, and open avatars directly in VRChat or VRCX. No account required (login via Discord for full access).
  • Premium — Everything in Free, plus access to the download search. Find and download .vrca avatar files directly from our servers.
  • Premium+ — Everything in Premium, plus the ability to submit download requests for avatars not currently in our downloadable archive. Priority support and early access to new features.

Technology

The AvatarRecovery platform is built on ASP.NET Core with a SQL Server backend for fast, reliable avatar search across millions of records. Our API serves structured JSON data for VRCX integration and third-party developer access. Authentication is handled through Discord OAuth2, meaning we never store or manage user passwords — your Discord account handles identity verification.

Key technical features include paginated search with session-based caching, hardware-based identification (HWID) for license enforcement, JWT bearer tokens for API authentication, and Google reCAPTCHA protection on sensitive endpoints.
